If the problem is gas in the stomach, belching brings relief. If the cause is not gas in the stomach, belching does not bring relief. Although excessive belching may be a sign of excessive gas, it usually is not and is rather a sign of abdominal discomfort of many causes or a learned habit of swallowing and immediately regurgitating the air as a belch. Rarely, excessive belching is due to swallowed air during acute psychiatric issues associated with anxiety.

Both aerophagia and supragastric belching can result in a person burping frequently.

This air enters a person’s stomach, which either releases it as a burp or moves it into the intestines. The NIDDK suggest that a person should also try eating and drinking more slowly to avoid swallowing more air. They can then check to see if there is a relationship between their excessive burping and their dietary behaviors or choice of foods.
