Preventing Infant Acid Reflux or GERD

Elevating the cot during sleep is not recommended

I’m a first time mom to a 15 day old baby girl. I had no idea what I was doing and couldn’t get her to sleep in her crib until I found your blog.

Hold Baby Upright Before Naps

Infants are more prone to acid reflux because their LES may be weak or underdeveloped. In fact, it’s estimated that more than half of all infants experience acid reflux to some degree.

Peppermint, caffeine, and certain asthma medications can make the lower esophageal sphincter relax and allow stomach contents to reflux back into the esophagus.

Reflux happens because muscles at the base of your baby’s food pipe have not fully developed, so milk can come back up easily. Ultimately, reflux is something that passes in most babies (though not all) around the time they begin sitting up for this very reason, so if you can hold baby upright pre-feeding then it will make a big difference. So with at least 3 babies who had reflux like symptoms, I learned that the best you can do is to make super baby is well fed, help minimize their pain or discomfort, and create the right conditions for sleep. This is one of the most common signs of acid reflux in older children and adults, but it may be hard to recognize in infants. Gravity helps keep the contents of the stomach down.

This is known as silent reflux. LATCH safety system. LATCH is an acronym for Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children and is the preferred method for installing your car seat.

Sleep is important, both for infants and for their parents. Make sure to establish a consistent bedtime routine, and then follow it nightly. Rocking your infant in an upright position until they’re drowsy and almost asleep can help soothe them and may lessen symptoms of GERD or acid reflux. Sometimes acid reflux causes babies to throw up everything they’ve eaten.

This will help aid digestion before your child sleeps. Because acid reflux occurs after meals, don’t put your infant to bed immediately after a feeding.

CMPA is more common in formula-fed babies than breastfed babies (Breastfeeding Network 2017) . If your baby is formula-fed, ask your doctor about giving him a hypoallergenic formula for a couple of weeks to see if it helps (Rosen et al 2018) . If you breastfeed your baby, ask your doctor’s advice about cutting out milk and other dairy products like cheese and yoghurt, so they can’t get into your breastmilk (Rosen et al 2018) .

For infants and children, endoscopy is usually done under general anesthesia. Babies get reflux when the ring of muscle between the oesophagus (food pipe) and stomach is not fully developed. Food or milk can leak out and travel back up the food pipe (NHS, 2019) . Other potential causes for reflux can include an intolerance to cow’s milk protein or other allergies (La Leche League 2017) . 2.

It’s thought that this may be due to a painful burning sensation caused by the buildup of stomach fluid in the esophagus. Infants with GERD may also start screaming and crying during feeding.

But it’s also bad because it deprives sufferers of oxygen, which can cause a variety of more serious cognitive, health, and developmental problems (Sargi and Younis 2007; Piteo et al 2011). And if infants don’t awaken when they experience breathing difficulties, they are at higher risk for sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).

Another common problem for babies with GER is that their frequent reflux pain often interrupts their naptime. Long naps are not only important for babies, they are a way for tired parents to find time to relax, get some things done around the house, or catch up on much-needed sleep themselves. The Amby is a perfect way to help your baby get those long naps you BOTH need.

(Please note, the 2% that do not see success typically have some sort of medical concern including, but not limited to, untreated, painful reflux.) It is very important to treat the pain of reflux and ensure adequate caloric intake before beginning any sleep training program. The newborn class may not turn a reflux baby into a perfect little sleeper, but it can still give parents the ability to read sleepy cues, soothe their fussy little one, and begin to lay a healthy sleep foundation. Notice that if the baby spits up while on her back, it drains into the esophagus which goes to the stomach instead of the lungs. As the picture demonstrates, the safer position is for a baby to lay on his back while sleeping- even with reflux. Doctors get concerned when babies begin to suffer with severe pain, have trouble gaining weight, show blood in their stool, refuse to eat, or begin to experience respiratory issues.
