Figure Figure11 shows a schematic diagram of the experimental apparatus. The gastric digestion process was simulated with a stomacher bag filled with SGF adjusted to pH 1.5 (40 ml, the fasting quantity of gastric juice for a healthy adult) (16, 21) and maintained at 37°C, and the secretion of gastric juices was simulated by using a peristaltic pump (catalog no. 205S; Watson Marlow Inc.) with peristaltic pump tubing (Tygon LFL, 1.14-mm internal diameter [ID]; Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics). The food (∼80 g) inoculated with the pathogen was transferred into a stomacher bag filled with SGF (40 ml) and homogenized for 2 min by using the stomacher. The bag filled with the homogenate was incubated in a water bath at 37°C with SGF secretion for 180 min. The SGF secretion was simulated to correspond to the real SGF secretion pattern (16, 21).

In this cell model, we demonstrated that HED antagonized caffeine-stimulated responses in TAS2R43-transfected cells. These results strongly indicate that TAS2R43 is involved in the proton secretory effect of caffeine. Nevertheless, involvement of other TAS2Rs or signaling pathways, such as adenosine receptors, or PDE inhibition cannot be excluded.
My hypothesis was that Sudafed would dissolve fastest in both the simulated stomach acid and water. The purpose of this experiment was to test which allergy nasal decongestant dissolved the fastest in water and simulated stomach acid. (from the excess HCl in the solution). So, part of the added acid is neutralized by the antacid tablet; the remainder is neutralized by the NaOH added.

Various germs enter our stomach when we eat and breathe, but these germs cannot survive because of the Hydrochloric acid in the stomach. The concentration of hydrochloric acid in the stomach is about 0.5 percent or 5,000 parts per million. Household white vinegar is an acid but its pH is about 2.4 so would not substitute for HCl as stomach acid.
Surely not! It turns out, according to at least one study, that stomach acid can do a pretty good number on a razor blade. Mathematical modeling of gastric acid secretion indicated that the two most influential variables on GAO analysis were meal buffering capacity (Figure 1a) and gastric acid secretion rate (Figure 1b).

The human gastric tumor cell line HGT-1 was obtained from C. Laboisse (Laboratory of Pathological Anatomy, Nantes, France) and cultured under standard conditions as described previously (8). Cytotoxicity of the tested substances and treatment reagents was excluded by MTT test as described before (8), and cell viability was determined by trypan blue staining. Tested cells had at least 90% cell viability.
