This ensures you don’t overeat and allows the stomach three hours to digest before lying down, avoiding night-time reflux. Based on my 27 years’ experience treating patients with acid reflux, I’ve devised a plan to tackle this growing problem, which I set out in my new book, The Acid Watcher Diet. Often, someone with these symptoms won’t realise they have reflux because the oesophageal tissues have likely been exposed to acid for so long, they’ve been numbed to its effects. Indigestion, known as dyspepsia also, is a general term for pain or discomfort felt after meals in the stomach region, associated with difficulty in digesting food.

Inside Men’s Health:
What often follows is that sour or bitter taste of acid reflux in your throat and mouth that can last minutes (if you are lucky) or hours (if you are not). Alcohol can do this in many ways. For example, it can relax the lower esophageal sphincter, which may allow stomach acid to escape into the esophagus and trigger heartburn ( 27 ).
Over time, this can make the esophagus more sensitive to stomach acid ( 27 ). In addition, alcoholic beverages, wine and beer especially, can increase your amount of stomach acid, which can increase the risk of heartburn ( 28 ). In that full case, those foods are a more likely trigger for heartburn than salt alone. The same study also found that people who consumed salted foods at least three times a week had a 50% higher risk of reflux than people who never ate salted foods ( 22 ).
Summary Onions, especially raw onions, may cause acid heartburn and reflux symptoms by relaxing the lower esophageal sphincter. In addition, onions are high in fermentable fiber, which may promote acid reflux symptoms. The capsaicin in spicy foods might cause heartburn by slowing the rate of digestion. Spicy foods may irritate your esophagus also, further worsening heartburn symptoms.
